Residents and visitors of Independence might like to take a peek at our nation’s history by visiting our 33rd president’s home. The home of Harry S Truman is preserved as a National Historic Site. The Truman Home was where our late president resided from 1919 until his death. This white Victorian style house was built by the maternal grandfather of Bess Wallace Truman and was known as the “Summer White House” during his presidency. The Truman Farm Home, built in 1894, is the centerpiece of a 5.25 acre remnant of the former 600 acre farm where Mr. Truman worked as a young man from 1906-1917.
The Santa-Cali Gon Days Festivities are held every Labor Day Weekend in Independence, when the community celebrates the starting point of pioneer explorations to the west via the Santa Fe, California and Oregon Trails. This four-day street festival features one of the Midwest’s largest arts and crafts shows, national country music and family entertainment. Scour the nine huge craft tents and hundreds of food and product booths and partake in the carnival fun. Over a quarter of a million people visit the festival during its four day run, and the best part is admission for festivities and all main stage entertainment is free.
